That was, however, a short-lived situation. Callaway brought Richard Helmstetter, an expert billiards consultant, home from Japan to begin designing the first of the Callaway golf drivers, golf irons, golf putters, and golf wedges, and immediately stamped Callaway Hickory Stick as the innovative force n club design by using computer-controlled machines to turn out perfectly flat putters.
Within five years, Callaway Hickory Stick had moved to Carlsbad, California, and undergone a second name change; it has been the Callaway Golf Company ever since. Its success was assured when, in 1989, sales passed the ten million dollar mark, and continued to grow between 200 and 300% each year thereafter.
Innovation has always been the foundation for the success of Callaway golf clubs. Mention the name of "Big Bertha" to a devoted male golfer, and you may see a smile like the one he sported when his favorite lady said "Yes," to the marriage proposal. The "Big Bertha" line of Callaway drivers and irons were named for the monstrous WWI German long-range mortar, which weighed almost ninety-five tons and fired eighteen-inch shells.
