Monday Night Football with NFL Merchandise Makes Our Week Complete

Are you ready for some NFL football? From September to January, many of us create our weekly schedules around NFL games. These games can occur on virtually any day of the week. There are games on Sundays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. If you are ready for some NFL football, the pre-season, regular-season and post-season scheduling of any NFL year should satisfy your cravings. During each of those games, you can support your favorite team with NFL merchandise. For example, if you are a Packers fan, break out your Green Bay Packers Merchandise.

MNF remains a winner

Throughout the years, Monday Night Football has remained a mainstay of the NFL schedule. After an entire day of blitzes and bombs on Sunday, Monday Night Football represents a culmination of the NFL week. It often includes the best matchup of the week and fierce division rivalries. In addition, with Monday Night football, America tunes in to a single game, different from Sunday’s full slate of games. This makes MNF the ultimate primetime TV.

Here are some amazing facts about the NFL’s Monday Night football series:

  • It has had the best TV ratings in the history of televised primetime sports
  • Over 50 million Americans watch Monday Night Football games each week
  • During the past 13 years, the series has earned a place in the list of the top 10 primetime TV shows.
  • It has become the top primetime TV show among males
  • Roughly 40% of its audience is composed of females

A new starting lineup

Before the next Monday Night Football game, get out your NFL merchandise (such as Houston Texans Merchandise.) Until then, you might find the story of how the NFL kicked off Monday Night Football, to be fascinating. Prior to ABC’s launching of Monday Night Football, the NFL had begun to assess, through CBS and then NBC, the notion of primetime football on TV. However, the latter two networks ultimately decided not to reshuffle their primetime schedule, and rejected the NFL’s offer.

However, ABC took the plunge. At that time, ABC Sports’ president, Roone Arledge, saw the huge potential of primetime televised football, and convinced his dubious colleagues to take the risk. The Cleveland Browns hosted the New York Jets, in the first Monday Night Football game, on September 21, 1970.  As the old saying goes, the rest is history.

The secret to MNF’s success

After completing the deal with the NFL, Arledge’s approach became quite innovative. While NFL games were already entertaining, he wanted to transform the primetime games into more than games. Arledge’s objective was to make the games not simply enjoyable, but thrilling and informative as well. For instance, Monday Night Football used nine video cameras to film the game, which was basically twice the number that the Sunday games operated. Today’s NFL fans, including those who cheer with Indianapolis Colts Merchandise, could appreciate such NFL coverage.

Besides the innovative media that Monday Night Football used, the broadcast team also included an outstanding broadcast team:

  • Howard Cosell: A former sports and entertainment lawyer, Cosell became one of the most famous sportscasters during the 1970s and 1980s. Cosell worked for ABC during his entire career as a sportscaster, from 1956-1992.  He became best known as a Monday Night Football anchor, from 1970-1983.

  • Keith Jackson: Jackson served for years in the U.S. Marines, and graduated from Washington State College. Besides serving as a sportscaster for Monday Night Football, Jackson has also covered NCAA football games, NBA basketball, the MLB’s World Series, Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics, NASCAR, and Formula One. Jackson has become renowned for his original expressions, such as "Whoah, Nellie!"

  • Don Meredith: Before working for ABC’s Monday Night Football, Meredith served as the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback. Meredith also helped to broadcast other NFL games, including two Super Bowls. In addition to being an athlete and sportscaster, Meredith has also done some minor acting.

The success of Monday Night Football was not only amazing, but also unexpected. The critics had forecasted that the NFL series would capture roughly a quarter of the Monday primetime market share. In fact, it garnered nearly a third of all Monday’s primetime TV viewers!

Throughout the years, Monday Night Football has continued to use innovative broadcasting methods, including:

  • Two full telecasting teams
  • State-of-the –art, computer-generated graphics
  • "Super slo-mo" video camera
  • Reverse angle replays
  • Computerized data-retrieval scheme
  • Electronic first-down stripe
