There are so many good courses in the southeastern United States that it is hard to narrow it down to just a few. But the states of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida hold some of the most challenging and exciting holes that you will find, not just in the southeast but in the entire U.S.
The state of South Carolina is swamped with great courses so break out your golf training aids before visiting this state. Perhaps it is because the coastal landscape naturally lends itself to golf or the fact that many people retire there and golf is the game of retirees. Regardless, there are too many to name all of the great courses in the palmetto state so we will just pick a few. Hilton Head, South Carolina has a reputation for their great outlet shopping and top notch golf courses and most agree that the Long Cove golf course is one that must be visited. The Long Cove course was created by golf course architect Pete Dye. With 18 holes and a par of 71, this course is challenging for even an accomplished golfer. It has been rated as one of the top 100 U.S. golf courses numerous times and continues to earn the distinction as one of Dyes greater achievements.
The private island of Kiawah in South Carolina is known all over the world for its great courses and exclusivity. With five different courses to play, the options are wide open but the one that has received rave reviews from other golfers is the Ocean Course. Kiawahs Ocean Course has hosted the World Cup twice, the Ryder Cup, the UBS Cup, the Senior PGA and is set to host the 94th PGA Championship in 2012. Hosting the Championship will make this course only the fourth one to host all of the American PGA major championships. One of the things that make this course so challenging are the strong winds. The winds off of the Atlantic Ocean make a substantial difference in the difficulty of this course, which has an ocean view from every hole. It has been called Americas toughest resort course as well as the #1 course in South Carolina.
The state of Georgia has several outstanding courses, not nearly as many as South Carolina, and it is the home of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. Augusta National has a course that no die hard golfer can say he has truly lived until playing this course. But you had better be working on your golf swing if you want the chance to play at this course. The Augusta National Course is so exclusive that the only way you will play those 18 holes is through an invitation from one of the members. With a course rating of 74 and a slope rating of 135, this course has bested many a golfer and has refused to be conquered on numerous occasions. Greats like Tiger Woods (who has golf fitness down pat) and Jack Nicklaus have both experienced defeat amongst their victories here. If you ever have the opportunity to play this illustrious course, jump on it.
Florida is another state that is flooded with retirees and great golf. The headquarters of both the PGA and the LPGA are in this state and one of the most prestigious courses in the country also resides there. The Blue Monster Course at the Doral Golf Resort in Miami, Florida has hosted the PGA Tour every year since 1962 and is referred to as The Kingdom Of Golf. Dont expect golf tips for beginners at this resort. There are 5 championship courses but the Blue Monster is known as one of the more challenging courses that are available for play. The north winds can cause the holes to become extremely tricky. It has been awarded a place in the top 100 courses in the U.S. and you have to be on top of your game to master this course.
There are certainly other great courses in the southeastern United States but these that we have discussed are truly the cream of the crop. They have been voted the top courses by Golf Magazine, World Golf, and other notable publications and governing boards. There are other southern states besides the three we have mentioned, it just seems that these three states hold some of the best golf in the south eastern United States.

Thank you for those great golf course ideas. I will be in the US next Spring so I have to get my golf fitness lessons turned up a notch before I check these golf courses out for real and try them out.

Yes definitely If you’re learning how to play golf go for a nice Florida course if you find one. They’re pricey but worth it. The people are always really polite and helpfun in the US too. I’m going back there next summer.
