The present day sports remain vague without cheerleading. The participating cheerleading athletes are called cheerleaders. It is a definitive motive to share a platform through tumbling, dance, jumping and stunting. Performed as one on one activity, cheerleading provides opportunity to the spectators to watch the performers with excitement. Primary motive of cheerleading is to cheer the sports teams while the game is in full swing. These competitions are highly vigorous. Cheerleading competitions are prominent cheerleading activities. Cheerleading competitions are planned activities around the world including Australia, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United Kingdom amongst others. It is a most quintessential promotional sports activity.
Thomas Peebles introduced cheerleading through gathering the cheerleaders at a football game event held in the University of Minnesota. It however remained in the back lane until 1898 when Johnny Campbell directed the cheerleading gathering Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah! which made Campbell the very first cheerleader. November 2, 1898 is the official initiation of organized cheerleading. The first cheerleading fraternity, Gamma Sigma was founded in 1903. Although cheerleading was initiated as an all-male activity, females had participation in 1923. Various games like gymnastics, tumbling and megaphones were promoted with cheerleading. Today more than 97% cheerleading participants are females and participate in cheer competitions.
The officially organized cheerleading competitions were the brainchild of International Cheerleading Foundation in 1967. The National Football League (NFL) organized professional cheerleading team in 1960 and provided an opportunity for organized cheerleading squads to pomp the Baltimore Colts. The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders gained popularity through exposing revealing outfits and sophisticated dance moves in their Cheerleading competitions in the 1972-1973 Season. They attained further publicity in the Super Bowl X in 1976. It was a stepping stone for cheerleading activities hence having a complete facelift in cheerleading came into fore. It completely changed the image of cheerleaders. Professional cheerleaders are the dance teams which persuade and motivate the players through cheering activities.
It was in 1980 that the beginning of modern cheerleading was practiced. The cheerleaders were prepared to perform adventurous and difficult stunt sequences. They were also inspired to portray excellent gymnastics performances on routine basis. The first televised broadcasting of National High School cheerleading competition was aired at ESPN in 1983. The National Council for Spirit Safety and Education (NCSSE) was initiated in 2003 which took care of safe training of cheerleading teams.
The present day cheerleading activity is associated with football and basketball games. Other sports including soccer, ice hockey, volleyball, baseball and wrestling usually sponsor cheerleaders to turn the event into a glamorous activity. Cheerleading became a completely international activity in 2007 when the ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup in South Africa was held. Cheerleaders were sponsored to pomp up the players and spectators as well. Besides this, the Florida Marlins too were the first Major League Baseball team which invited cheerleaders.
Although glamorous in nature, cheerleading is still considered one of the toughest sports activities today. Usually the cheerleaders get injured while doing stunting. This act has a terminology called pyramid. It is performed in utter dangerous conditions. Often cheerleaders perform these stunts in the games as well as pep rallies. But this activity remains highly attractive in cheerleading competitions. The stunts like fliers in which a girl is on the top with one, two, three or four bases and the girls or boys remain on the bottom looks highly adventurous. Common cheerleading injuries are back injuries, sprained ankles, head injuries, broken arms, elbow injuries and knee injuries.
Every cheerleading performance is well equipped with medical assistance in case a health injury happens. This activity has been gaining popularity due to its adventure cum glamour elements and it is already a welcome initiative in the global sphere. This is the primary reason that cheer competitions have been growing exponentially around the globe.
