American League Central Competition
This division is only one of 3 divisions in the AL. The division was formed in 1994 as part of a realignment. All of the teams are located in the central part of the country. It is the only division where all the teams in it have won the World Series at least once. Only one of these teams has won the World Series as a member of the AL Central (the White Sox). Chicago swept the Houston Astros in 4 games. There was a lot of Chicago White Sox merchandise down in Houston for both games 3 and 4 in that series.
The Chicago White Sox were formerly a member of the AL West. The Cleveland Indians were formerly a member of the AL East. Cleveland was in the talks of being one of the best teams in the division but they seem to lose steam as the season begins. Also, Cleveland Indians merchandise sales lost steam as well. The Detroit Tigers were formerly a member of the AL East. The Tigers were thought to make a huge splash last year. They started the season off winless through many games. Many fans were wishing they hadn’t went and bought all that Detroit Tigers merchandise. The Kansas City Royals were a member of the AL West. The Minnesota Twins were a member of the AL West. Kansas City and Minnesota have failed to step up in recent years. Not many people talk about them and as you would expect not many fans wear Kansas City Royals merchandise or Minnesota Twins merchandise to their respective games.
This division was the very last division out of MLB’s teams to create a wild card team. This was 12 years after it was founded in the early 1990s. The Minnesota Twins won the wild card in 2006, which guaranteed that they would be the team, and not Boston, that would play in the playoffs. The Twins knocked the White Sox out of playoff contention. Then they passed the Tigers at the last possible moment and that caused the Twins to win the division, and the Tigers go the wild card spot.
The Indians have won 7 AL Central titles. The Twins have won 4 titles. The White Sox have won 3 titles. The Tigers and the Royals have not won the division yet.
