Football History and Basics

Football is a sport. It could mean soccer for other countries but football is a more known term for rugby in America. Basically, it is a competitive team sports which require two teams competing against each other. This game is played on a specialized field where every ten yard is marked. The whole field is three-hundred sixty feet long and a hundred sixty feet wide. The end zone on each side of the field is the scoring area. This is where the players of each team run to score their goal which is termed as a touchdown. There are eleven players in each team playing in the field at a time. However, each team can have substitutes if the time allows it. Each team is divided into basically three units – offense, defense and special unit. This is the reason why there are at least forty-six players in each National Football League team. The offense’ aim is to score. While the defense’ aim is to stop there opponent from scoring. The special unit however, is the name for the players whose main goal is to kick the ball.

The game is consisted of four fifteen minutes or in high school football it could be twelve minutes. There is also a twelve minute break after the second fifteen minutes. This can be compared to a half-time break in a basketball game. This is usually the time where cheerleaders cheer on their teams with special numbers. However, a football game could take longer. This is because the time starts at the kick off of the ball and stops at every end of a play. A play is the term used for the strategies used by each team to score. The end of these plays could mean a touchdown or an interception or it could mean an incomplete pass or a tackle.

Each half of the game starts with a coin toss. It is either between coaches or between captains of each team. The winner of the coin toss can choose whether to receive, kick or choose the goal that they are going to defend. They if the winner chooses to kick or receive the other team can decide which goal to defend and vice versa. Oftentimes, the winner of the coin toss would choose to receive. This means that the other team would kick the ball and they would have to receive it. However, the kicker can choose to kick the ball with minimum force so that their team can receive it and they would stay as the offensive team. This is often called as the onside kick.

The offense will aim to have a touchdown. But the defense will do their best to stop the offense of the opposing team. The offensive team has a maximum of four tackles and if they get past through ten yards, it will be considered as their first down. They would then have another for chance to score or to get past another ten yards. If the offensive team gets tackled four times before reaching the first or second ten yards. They would have to punt the ball – kick it – or still do rushing. Rushing means that they would do the usual, snapping the ball and passing it on to another player. The danger of a rushing after the fourth down is the possibility of being tackled in a short distance. This is because the place where the offense of one team is tackled will be the same place where the offense of the opposing team will start.

The starting line of a football game where the ball is placed is called the line of scrimmage. The offensive player at the center will have to pass the ball to the person behind him – usually the quarterback. This pass is called as snap. The quarterback then has the chance to execute their play. He either passes the ball to the player who will run to reach the goal or he will run himself – called a running play. The players who usually run ahead to receive the ball are called the running back or sometimes just a receiver. When the offensive team has reached there fourth down they need to turn over the ball. So they either punt or rush the ball. This means that the other team will have a chance at scoring.

A football field also has goalposts on each end where each team can score. The score is made when the ball passes through the goalpost. It is usually done when the offensive team is near a goalpost. A goalpost is standing ten feet from the ground and it has a cross bar on top which has posts on its end. The posts are two hundred twenty-two inches apart for high skill levels and two hundred eighty inches apart for low skill levels.
