Razorbacks Make Good Competition
The Arkansas Razorbacks play in Fayetteville, AR. They adopted Hogs as their nickname. The Hogs can be used to describe either the women or men’s sports there.
The Razorbacks are the only NCAA Division school that has a porcine nickname. Their Razorback shop has porcine stuff like Arkansas Razorbacks bedding.
The school has 19 varsity teams. 8 of these teams are for men and 11 are for women. The Razorbacks play in the Western Division of the SEC.
Bobby Petrino coaches the football team. Houston Nutt, who now coaches at Ole Miss, coached at Arkansas for ten years.
John Pelphrey is the coach of the men’s basketball team. The team calls the Bud Walton Arena home. The team has been to the Final Four 6 times in their history.
The baseball team plays at Baum Stadium. The stadium is getting new skyboxes and recently underwent major renovations. The team reached the World Series a few years ago. During the time Arkansas was in the World Series, the Razorback store saw a sharp increase in sales.
The women’s and men’s athletic teams merged. The women’s teams were known as Lady Backs, but now also are known as Razor Backs. The women’s teams have a total of 17 combined SEC championships.
Arkansas finds the rivalry with Texas to be emotional. Texas holds the lead in football with the Razorbacks. The Razorbacks hold the lead with Texas in basketball. The media goes crazy when they play them in any sport. One example of this frenzy was when in 2000 when Arkansas played against Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The University of Arkansas, even though they were way further from Dallas, than the University of Texas, still outnumbered Texas by 2 to 1 in that game. Fans had on an Arkansas Razorback hat as well as an Arkansas Razorback shirt. Many people had their faces painted.
